Abstract
Background. Dental caries is the primary cause of oral pain and tooth loss. It is a major problem in young children. One of the determining factors of dental caries is nutrition, and the numbers of obesity keep increasing This has led the authors to investigate the relationship between body mass index with dental caries.
Objectives. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between body mass index and dental caries in Maria elementary and junior high school Depok.
Methodology. This study was a cross-sectional study conducted analytic observation. The sampling method is consecutive sampling taken from the results of a medical examination of students in Maria elementary and junior high school. Respondents were 170 elementary and junior high school students. The results of medical examinations students are used to obtain data on height, weight and dental health. Data analysis was performed using chi-square test with a confidence level of 95% (a = 0.05).
Result and conclusion. Based on the data obtained, from 170 respondents, 88 people who have less weight, 35 of them had dental caries and the remaining 53 people do not have dental caries. Respondents who had a normal weight were 42 people, 16 people have dental caries, while 26 people do not have dental caries. Respondents with overweight were 13 people, 3 people have dental caries and 10 people do not have dental caries. Respondents with obesity 1 there are 21 people, 8 of them had dental caries and the remaining 13 people do not have dental caries. Finally respondents with obesity 2 were 6 people, 2 people have dental caries, and 4 people do not have dental caries. Using chi square, authors found no association between body mass index with dental caries (p = 0.732).
Suggestion. Need a further research based on the many factors that can form dental caries. It should also be taken DMFT and dmft values in order to assess the extent in body mass index affects the formation of dental caries.
