Abstract
Background.
Body Mass Index is a method calculated from a person's weight and height, widely used to measure the degree of obesity. This method cannot measure the amount of body fat directly. The weight calculated in BMI is the total of muscle mass, bone mass, fat mass and the weight of total body water. Obesity itself is defined as the gain of body weight due to the high amount of body fat.
Objective.
Discovering the overweight that caused by the excess of body fat in High
School Student.
Methods.
This research used a cross-sectional study design. The number of respondents taken was 130 children from a High School in Jakarta. The
BMI classification we used is based on age and gender for child aged 2 -
20 years old. The calculation of Body Fat Percentage is measured from a device Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. Data analyzed by SPSS version 15 with descriptive and analytic method, using Chi-Square and Spearman formula to find both relation and correlation between Body Mass Index and Body Fat Percentage.
Results and conclusions.
Most of the respondents have normal BMI and Body Fat Percentage ( average BMI = 21.89; Body Fat Percentage = 21.55% ). Gender does not relate to BMI and Body Fat Percentage. BMI is strongly found to be associated with Body Fat Percentage in a positive direction ( r = 0.645; p = 0.000 ). 15.38% of all respondents have their weight classified as overweight and obese due to excess body fat.
