Abstract
Background : Adrenomedullin is a multifunctional regulatory peptide hormone that has been known to have roles in breast cancer carcinogenesis especially during the growth and developmental process of cancer cells, angiogenesis, and lymph node infiltration. However, its role and function as indicator for bone metastasis occurrence detection in breast cancer are still poorly understood thus further study is needed.
Research Objective : To know the association between rise of adrenomedullin plasma levels with bone metastasis occurrence in breast cancer patient.
Method : This research was an analytical cross-sectional study in several private hospitals in Jakarta on September-November 2014. 46 female breast cancer patients were taken as research subjects and were divided into two groups according to the bone metastasis status. 5 cc blood sample was taken from each subjects from each groups and adrenomedullin plasma levels was measured using sandwich ELISA. Shapiro-Wilk test was done in order to check the distribution characteristic of the sample population then data transformation was done upon the adrenomedullin plasma levels variable into trans. adrenomedullin. Then the data were analysed using 1-tailed Student T-test.
Result : Through 1-tailed T-test the p-value = 0.041 with 95% confidence interval = -0.01242 – 0.19932 which means that there’s a significant rise of the trans. adrenomedullin mean of the breast cancer patients with bone metastasis group compared to breast cancer patients without bone metastasis group.
Conclusion : There is a significant association between rise of adrenomedullin plasma levels with bone metastasis occurrence in breast cancer patients.
