Isi artikelBackground: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has been used as a method of learning. Tutorial session is an important activity of this method Tutors have an important role in its activities. Medical education institutions should make efforts to improve function and performance of tutorial by evaluating tutors' performance and investigating their backgrounds. Aim: to know the relationship between lecturers' background and students perceptions of the lecturers' role as tutors. Methods: This research was a cross sectional study. The subject was involved students in PBL tutorial of Laboratory Based Diagnostic, Tropical Medicine, Pharmacology, and Pathological Anatomy Modules in 2006-2007. The independent variables of this research are lecturers' backgrounds and the dependent variables are student perceptions about the lecturers' performance as tutors in PBL tutorials. Questionnaires given to the students evaluate their perception of the lectures' role of as tutor, used 4 points Likert scale. Questionnaires were given in every last tutorial of each module. Completed questionnaires processed and analyzed with Chi Square analysis and contingencies coefficients. Result: From 852 questionnaires were distributed that 775 questionnaires (90.91 %) were returned, and 160 questionnaires (20.65%) were uncompleted filled. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant correlation between lecturer's backgrounds, including education level, gender, background of science, and age; and the perception of students about the role of lecturers as tutors (by appropriate degree of freedom and a0,05), by tutor's age showed the strongest correlation (CC=0.313). Conclusion: There is correlation between lecturer backgrounds and the perception of students about the role of lecturers as tutors Tutor's backgrounds can be used as a consideration in lecturers' recruitment as tutors. However, the background is not the only factor affect their performance, the performance track record can be more considered, as part of efforts to obtain an effective tutorial.
