Intravascular catheters are indispensable in modern-day medical practice. Although such catheters provide necessary vascular access, their use puts patients at risk for local and systemic infectious complications, including local site infection. Phlebitis and or thrombophlebitis is one of local site complications. There is always the inherent danger of embolism when thrombosis occurs. Role of the nurse in prevention of phlebitis is very important because nurses have responsible for in¬serting and caring peripheral intravenous catheter. Cross sectional study was conducted to know the riskfactor were influencing of phlebitis incidence in private Hospital in Jakarta, January 2005. The sample size is total population, 401 catheter intravenous siting were observed This study inspected the influence of material of intravenous catheter, type of infuston line, site of insertion and type of solution (independent variable) for incidence of phlebitis (dependent variable). This research used univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis. Incidence of phlebitis was 14,7%. In this research, the most influenced factors were material of intravenous catheter (p = 0,005), type of infusion line (p =0,022), site of insertion (p =0,033) and type of solution (p= 0,050).
