Isi artikelDemocracy relies upon 3 Ds: debate, dialogue and deliberation. It also relies upon other things, of course, such as equality of participation at the ballot box, but the 3 Ds are themselves predicated on equal participation. In light of their necessity, in what ways do television talk shows contribute to the process and discourse of democratic politics? For some, they are merely a gaudy circus of talk, but that critical take now seems as old-fashioned as it is elitist. Some of the most interesting recent work in popular culture studies has tried to steer a line between intellectual elitism and cultural populism by thinking about how the popular arts can and do foster a democratic politics. That is the line followed in this book. The talk show is a good vehicle for pursuing it, for it mingles mass entertainment and civic-minded discussion.
