Facing the challenge of the ‘hundreds of books and articles’ that have been published since the break-up of Yugoslavia (p. 1), this new volume is announced by its editor Pål Kolstø as an attempt to offer an innovative approach to the study of the several violent conflicts which have marked the successive disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) since the beginning of the 1990s. The proclaimed novelty of this approach consists of bringing together three different theoretical perspectives – studies of ethnic conflict, theories of collective identity construction and discourse analysis – which are all comprehensibly elaborated and thoughtfully interconnected within the introductory part of the book, giving the volume overall a unitary and solid theoretical framework.
