Abstract
Vibrio cholerae is known as causative agent of the diarrheal disease cholera. The significant health problem that occur as a result of infection is antibiotic resistance. Some cholera outbreaks show sporadic cases of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance can be caused by biofilm formation from the bacteria. This biofilm formation provides some advantages that associated with pathogenic process and survival. In this study, we screened for endophytic bacteria with antibiofilm activity against V. cholerae. Fifty-two endophytic bacteria isolates were obtained from several medicinal plants in the previous study. Antibiofilm activity was determined by inhibition and destruction assay. Fifteen isolates were known to have capability to inhibit or degrade the biofilm formation of V cholerae. Thirteen isolates (AF I, AF3, JahF4, KunF5, JerF2, JerF4, ShiF1, ShiF2, ShiF3, ShiF4, BelF2, BelF3, and BelF9) were further characterized with PCR and DNA Sequencing of 16S-rRNA gene. AF1 isolate which has the highest activity for destruction of biofilm (66,29%) showed 98% similiarity with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, while ShiF4 isolate which has the highest activity for inhibition of biofilm (71,77%) showed 98% similiarity with Pseudomonas psychrotolerans. Further research is needed to characterize the active compound to develop an alternative strategy for V. cholerae treatment.
