Abstract
Improving the students’ skills in writing has been a great challenge for teachers in enhancing the students’ writing competence. The use of instructional rubrics in teaching writing has been widely discussed by previous studies emphasizing the positive aspects of rubrics on the students’ learning process. One interesting question is whether the use of instructional rubric is effective in improving the students’ writing skills. While there is a large body of research emphasizing the potential advantages of using certain types of scoring rubrics, there is still little research about its effectiveness in improving students’ writing skills in an actual high school classroom setting. Moreover, how high school students respond to the use of instructional rubric in teaching has not been widely observed. This study examined the use of instructional rubric to improve the students’ skills in writing. It focused on determining the extent to which it is effective. The results of the analysis of the pre and post-test scores showed that there was a significant improvement in the students’ post-test scores in comparison to their pre-test ones. The analysis of the students’ responses to questionnaires concerning the use of instructional rubric in the teaching and learning process indicated that the students had responded positively and found it useful in their learning process. Similarly, the analysis of the random interviews also confirmed that the students felt positive with the use of instructional rubric in their learning process and had considered it useful for them.
