This research studied the influence brought by extensive reading on three Indonesian high school students on their EFL learning beliefs. English is a foreign language, which most students tend to see as an unfamiliar language. Thus they are not confident in learning and mastering the language. It is a case study that observed three new students in grade ten who have similar backgrounds in EFL learning. The teacher applied a regular sustained silent reading program as a part of the English teaching curriculum. This study employed descriptive method in exposing the shift from the beliefs prior to the reading program to the ones after. The data were gathered through Likert-scale questionnaires, weekly journals, and semi-structured interviews. The thesis concluded that extensive reading influenced the students’ beliefs in EFL learning in three implications: gradual improvement in English learning, the need for a better learning strategy, and more-mature learning strategies. It also helped learners in coping with their reading and writing skills learning in their first semester. |
