Abstract
In recent years, interaction between languages has been increasing rapidly especially between English and other languages considering English as the lingua franca of this era. Among the causes of this rapid increase is the technological advancement in mass media which is causing many languages to extensively borrow words from English; among these languages is Arabic. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the use of English language borrowing in Arabic newspapers, considering the written media one of the main channels of introducing English words in Arabic and newspapers as the most important type of written media. Thus the main gap of this research is investigating if the use of English language borrowing is increasing or decreasing in newspapers, whether newspapers are one of the sources of English language
borrowing in Arabic, why journalists frequently prefer to use borrowed words instead of translation and what are the differences in the use of language borrowing between articles
originally written in Arabic and translated articles. The method used in conducting this thesis was selecting three most widely spread Arabic newspapers, namely the Middle East, Al Quds and Al Hyatt newspapers. Selecting articles from one specific rubric in these three newspapers in the first three days of the first three months of the years 2004 and 2014 and examining these articles to extract all English borrowed words found. After that all the extracted data were examined to reach to a conclusion. During the data collection for this research three articles translated from English to Arabic were found and the
use of language borrowing in these three articles was compared with the use of language borrowing in Arabic articles. The results of this study were significant and against expectations. It showed that the increase in the number of used English borrowed words in Arabic written articles is insignificant. The results also showed the reasons behind using English language borrowing instead of translation in newspapers and revealed the linguistic differences between originally Arabic written articles and English articles translated and published in Arabic. The results also revealed that articles originally written in Arabic contain English borrowed words while translated articles did not contain any. The first conclusions of this thesis revealed that the use of English language borrowing did not increase significantly over ten year’s period. Second it revealed the reasons behind the use of language borrowing by journalists while still can find semantic equivalence in Arabic. Third, this thesis revealed a significant difference between articles originally written in Arabic and Articles originally written in English and translated and published in Arabic.
