Isi artikelPrevious studies have recently investigated variability of definiteness and specificity in the use of English articles by second language learners. The present study focuses on how Indonesian learners encode definiteness and specificity and on the role that these features play in the acquisition of English articles. Sixty eight subjects from the fourth year of three different English Departments were given three tasks, i.e. forced-choice elicitation, written production, and translation tasks to collect the data. The result confirms the previous studies that definiteness and specificity play some semantic roles in the acquisition of English articles by L2 learners. The subjects also encode definiteness with either [+definite] or [-definite] and specificity with [+definite] in the use of English articles. More importantly, the learners tend to use ”the avoidance strategy” in the translation task as they use NP constructions, the referential this or that, and the quantifier some instead of the expected articles in the contexts which elicit their use.
