Only recently was it announced that MTV Networks International’s Emerging Markets group would launch Nickelodeon branded programmes in Hungary (Digital TV Europe. net, 2009a). Airing on the commercial channel TV 2, the two-hour programming block, including Dora the Explorer, Wonder Pets and SpongeBob SquarePants, represents the first time that the Nickelodeon brand will appear on Hungarian terrestrial television. At the same time it was also reported that Polish pay-TV operator, Cyfrowy Polsat, will give its customers free access to Disney Channel and Disney XD for a month (Digital TV Europe.net, 2009b). Such cross-border activities have come to play a determining role in the transformation of local media cultures and national television industries. It is this kind of transnational flow of television services and products involving local, national, regional and global elements that intrigues Jean K Chalaby – and it is the subject of this, his latest book, Transnational Television in Europe, which ‘tells the story of transnational television in Europe from its origins in the early 1980s to the present day’ (p. 1).
