The Burden of Remembering emerges from papers given at the international conference ‘Memory from Transdisciplinary Perspectives: Agency, Practices and Mediations’ at the University of Tartu in Estonia in 2007. It contributes to a growing body of literature dealing with memory, remembering and historical consciousness in the 20th and 21st centuries. It falls squarely in the realm of the emerging field of memory studies although each chapter has a specific disciplinary inflection ranging from psychology to history. Within memory studies a distinctive strand of enquiry involves national memory and the social and cultural practices which inform, sustain and reconstruct it. The book shares these concerns and focuses on the particular issues at stake in remembering the Second World War and the collapse of communist regimes and ideology in Europe.
