Isi artikelWhat would a European public sphere look like? Since it does not, as yet, exist, one can only conjecture, but the authors of this book point us towards what would need to be among its constituent features: media monitoring of EU governance, convergence of national public discourses, a move to a more common basis of cross-national intercourse and the manifestation of a European identity in public debate. In the book they examine the degree to which national public spheres have already been Europeanized, focusing on news media. National news media are, for them, critical sites for the emergence of a European public sphere. They seek to examine how much national media have moved over the last 20 years towards a more European perspective and a more transnational way of discussing and debating continent-wide issues and problems. The book presents the findings of their study of the transnationalization of national public discourses in the UK, France, Germany, Austria and Denmark. They offer sophisticated quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the broadsheet press in these countries, setting out their methodological stall in the second chapter.
