Isi artikel
Thomas Austin’s study of documentary and audiences is timely, as there are now more documentaries in the cinemas and consequentially more audience interest in them. The films Austin discusses at length are Etre et Avoir, Touching the Void, Paradise Lost and Capturing the Friedmans, all exemplars, as he sees it, of the documentary ‘boom’ of the last decade. The documentary ‘boom’ is, above all, a commercial categorization, and Austin’s examples are those documentaries that can be deemed popular by dint of doing relatively – and unexpectedly – well at the box office.
