Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze the translation of news title “In Indonesia, a Governor at Home on the Streets” published by The New York Times into 10 title translations broadcasted by 10 Indonesian media, namely Detik.com, Kompas.com, Viva News (Viva.co.id), Merdeka.com, Tempo.co, Liputan6.com, Kontan.co.id, Teraspos.com, Rimanews.com, and Solopos.com.
The data sources of the study were one news article title in The New York Times’ article and its title translations published by the 10 Indonesian media. The researcher applied descriptive analysis technique which was supported by the relevant theories of fact principles, translation procedure, and translation choices. Observing text and interviewing the news translator or the news editor are conducted as the instrument of the data analysis. The journalists were asked through structural interview by the researcher to find out the consideration and the reason in deciding the title translation.
There are three research questions discussed in this thesis: (1) how is the fact principle represented in the translation of The New York Times’ title reporting “Blusukan Jokowi”?, (2) what kinds of translation procedures are applied by the translator/news editor in translating The New York Times’ title reporting “Blusukan Jokowi”?, and (3) What factors are considered in deciding the title translation?
Based on thorough analysis, it can be concluded that: (1) 12 out of 23 data (52.2% data) derived from 10 title translations of The New York Times' article reporting "Blusukan Jokowi" is factual. While, five out of 23 data (21.7% data) of them is less factual, and the rest six out 23 data (26.1% data) is not factual; (2) The procedures employed in translating The New York Times’s title telling “Blusukan Jokowi” are reorganization, deletion, addition, inclusion, substitution, generalization, and amplification; (3) There are five factors in deciding translation of The New York Times’s title reporting “Blusukan Jokowi”, namely popular word, page viewer?, word limitation, attractive word, and different word.
