This study aimed in analyzing the different linguistic features employment by males and females SMAN 8 students in Jakarta. Thirteen linguistic features proposed Mulac, Bradac and Gibbons (2001), analyzed in Hamdi and Dabaghi (2012) were investigated in order to attempt to reveal the tendency from males and females in employing thirteen linguistic features. The results of this study projected that the participants employed eight out of thirteen linguistic features differently. In the previous studies, words, mean length sentences, “I” references, judgmental adjectives, intensive adverbs, uncertainty verbs, dependent clauses and hedges were performed differently in this study. In previous studies, females tend to employ words, “I” references, mean –length sentences, intensive adverbs, hedges, and uncertainty verbs, meanwhile males tend to employ judgmental adjectives and dependent clauses. In this study, all of those linguistic features were employed in the opposite way, expect for hedges, as both male and female participants in this study did not employ hedges. Cultures and social context and situation is believed to play a significant role in shaping the result of this study. |
