In daily life, people usually give judgment toward a person’s language ability simply by the way that person speaks. Self-esteem affects students’ speaking performance. The three affective strategies also influence students’ speaking performance. Meanwhile, students’ self-esteem and the use of affective strategies are related each other. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to find out if student’s self-esteem and the use of affective strategies are interrelated in influencing the speaking achievements. The present study aims at discovering if there is any relation between self-esteem and speaking achievement, self-esteem and the use of affective strategies, and the use of affective strategies and speaking achievement. Lastly, this study attempted to find out if the level of self-esteem and the use of affective strategies are interrelated in affecting speaking achievements. The survey research method using questionnaire was the basic research design for this study. The writer used Likert-scale questionnaire measuring students’ selfesteem and the use of affective strategies. The researcher used the purposive sampling design to determine the 54 EFL undergraduate students of the English Department Faculty of Education in a private University in Jakarta who were taking Speaking II classes as the sample of this study. The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 21 and the distribution table. The result of this study shows that self-esteem and speaking achievement were not correlated. In addition, there was no relation between self-esteem and the use of affective strategies in this study. This study also shows that the use of affective strategies has no relation with speaking achievement. In addition, the other result of this study shows that the interrelation between self-esteem and the use of affective strategies did not affect speaking achievement. |
