The origin and nature of possible antigens being responsible for the spontaneous production of anti-DNA antibodies, however, is still an unsolved problem. Since native human dsDNA per se is not immunogenic, several concepts regarding the induction of anti-dsDNA antibodies have been developed, including non selective polyclonal B cell activation, selective B cell stimulation or stimulation by crossreactive antigens.
