The US economy is in a state of transition, and its confusing contours have led observers to adopt opposing interpretations. Some paint the picture of a ‘casino’- capitalism, whose ‘paper entrepreneurs’ on Wall Street sell off the productive base of the USA, leaving behind ‘hollow corporations’ that function only as marketing organisations for foreign products. Others describe a rejuvenated US economy in which new production paradigms have emerged, such as ‘flexible specialisation’ or ‘Saturn’s’ workers’ participation, which allow for a new export offensive. Factual evidence can surely be found for both positions. But what is the reality? As a first step to answering this question, it may be useful to abandon the superficial macro view for a sectoral analysis. The loss of a general overview seems to be well compensated for by a more profound and more differentiated insight into the transformation processes of some US industries.
