The long economic recession which started in the mid ’70s has triggered a pervasive process of transition involving major changes starting from production and increasingly affecting all spheres of social and political life. At the level of industrial organisation this transition is reflected in a restructuring pattern which breaks radically with the principles of mass production (standardisation, long production runs, large volumes of output of identical products resting in the utilisation of dedicated machines) prevailing during the post-war economic boom
