Isi artikelThe role of dialectical logic in Marx’s Capital is a crucial issue in the recent debate between ‘Analytical’ and more ‘Fundamentalist’ Marxists concerning the methodology of Marxian political economy. On one side, the Analytical Marxists deny that dialectics either played a useful or essential role in Capital or that it is a valid tool for Marxian political economy today (see, for example, Roemer, 1986). By contrast, a dialectical reading of Capital, incorporating the methodological distinction between ‘capital in general’ and ‘many capitals’, has been a crucial element in recent Fundamentalist efforts to synthesise and update Marx’s analysis of capitalism (Mandel, 1975; Rosdolsky, 1977; Fine and Harris, 1979; Weeks, 1981; Harvey, 1982; Smith, 1990
