The paper gives an account of how a dictionary project in the humanities, the revision of The English-Chinese Dictionary ( Unabridged ) (1991) with Lu Gusun as Editor-in-Chief, is currently being undertaken. The new edition of the said dictionary takes over a lexicographic tradition of independent study and analysis of evidence as was cultivated by the first edition fifteen years ago. The discussion is mainly centred around two topics: how various new types of evidence which are now available in sufficient quantities from a multitude of sources help enrich the text and how the principle of 'independent compilation' set down for the first edition is being abided by for the present project. The purpose of the discussion is not only to make for the exchange of ideas about Chinese lexicography - an area not adequately represented in international lexicographic literature, but also to tackle the problem of how to cull new words and expressions and enter them in modern bilingual dictionaries, which is not only a challenge academically, but also serves the urgent practical needs of students, teachers, scholars and translators with English as a working language.
