Isi artikelWhy should one study history? In a rapidly expanding subject such as lupus erythematosus in which several thousand papers are published around the world each year it is possible to imagine that everything is vibrant and new. Medlars searches rarely go back more than ten years and this gives a false picture of medical progress, leading to the omission and lack of consideration of numerous excellent descriptions of disease and research. Study of old journals reveals long lost pearls and an added pleasure is to browse along the side lines into other subjects and to realise that many exciting observations are not new.
