Bacillus coagulans is a lactic acid-producing probiotic being widely researched for its benefits. Based on several in vitro studies this probiotic has anti-inflammation and immunomodualtion properties. As rheumatoid arhtritis (RA) based on autoimmunity, RA improvement relies on the reduction of inflammation in the joints. The main objective of this literature review is to study on how B. coagulans acted as adjuvant therapy for RA. This literature review was written based on the review of various sources such as textbooks and journals published in the last decade. The results of our study include the effect of B. coagulans against cytokines such as IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-a. This literature review also examines the influence of B. coagulans against Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), chemotaxis of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN), and maturation of Antigen Presenting Cell (APC). Anti-microbial properties of B. coagulans which may play a role in reducing the symptoms of AR are also explored in this literature review. In addition, this literature review also compared some probiotics with B. coagulans for its effect on RA. |
