Abstract
Background: Neuropsychological tests as primary tool in diagnosing elderly with neurodegenerative disease have some limitations, so that it is necessary to develop non neuropsychological tests which can reflect the degenerative process. Naming is frequently one of the cognitive functions that show impairment early in the course of the disease. In addition, olfactory dysfunction can also be found early in the course of the disease, even before cognitive impairment occurs. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between olfactory dysfunction and naming impairment in elderly, and the diagnostic value of odor identification test in assessing naming performance in elderly.
Methods: Research was carried out by using the analytical method with cross-sectional study. Subjects consisted of 80 elderly ages above 60 years old. The study was conducted at Kalianyar, West Jakarta.
Results: This study shows about 21,3% of the elderly have olfactory dysfunction and about 28,8% of the elderly have naming impairment. This study also shows a relationship between olfactory function and naming performance (p=0.05) and elderly with olfactory dysfunction have eight times greater risk of having naming impairment (OR=7,792). The sensitivity of odor identification test is 47,82% and the specificity is 89,47% in assessing naming performance in elderly.
Conclusion: Olfactory dysfunction has found to be associated with naming impairment. Elderly with olfactory dysfunction have eight times greater risk of having naming impairment. Odor identification test has a high specificity in assessing naming performance in elderly.
