Isi artikelThomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia with a vision of an academical village. In this academic community designed by Jefferson, student rooms were interspersed among faculty pavilions and classrooms. Students and faculty lived in close proximity to foster a scholarly environment. Today we are in the process of establishing and electronic academical village in Virginia. This electronic community will connect approximately 2,000 Virginia schools in 137 school districts to more than 10,000 nodes on the existing national inter-university computer network. When it is completed, a single seamless telecomputing netwotk will link all Virginia schools from kindergarden through graduate school. A primary justification for establishment of the statewide public education telecomputing network is administrative. The network is designed to improve communication among school administrators. However, with proper planning, an educational computer network can be used for instructional as well as administrative applications once the technological infrastructure is in place.
