Isi artikelThis article related experiences in a major textbook production project in a Central American country, financed by an internasional development agency through the Ministry of Education of the country. Improvement of primary education is the goal of the overall project. It includes efforts to improve the management information system of the Ministry of Education, primary teacher training, and student achievement evaluation. The central element is the design and preparation a new textbooks for six primary grades in four subjects: Spanish, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Natural Sciences. This article will present the background and rationale of the project, a series of observations about what went wrong-expressed as "how not to do it" and some general conclusions which should be useful for any professional involved in textbook design and development in educational projects in third-world countries.
