Isi artikelAlthough some rheumatology divisions have been developing thorough epidemiological protocols in some parts of the country, appropriate data concerning the incidence and prevalence of systemic lupus erythema- tosus (SLE) in Brazil are not available. Despite being considered as an uncommon disease by internists involved in primary healthcare, we have reason to believe that the incidence of SLE is relatively high in Brazil. Most cases presenting with severe and systemic involvement are usually referred to specialists at tertiary public centers, which obviously gather higher numbers of patients with SLE compared with private hospitals and offices.
