Abstract
Background: Female breast cancer comes second in Southeast Asia and represent 16% of all cancers. Breast cancer incidence been multiplying, although there’re no maximal effect of therapy found yet. Cancer’s treatment needs to be combined with EGCG consumption. EGCG is a green tea compound and known as adjuvant therapy for breast cancer.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to gather information about EGCG’s work mechanism and recommended dose as adjuvant therapy for breast cancer.
Methods: Systematic review were used and using Springerlink, Google scholar, and proquest. The journals were from 2003 – 2013 and key words were EGCG, negative estrogen receptor breast cancer, SERM, flavonoid, tamoxifen, green tea. Critical appraisal used to check the quality of journals.
Results : 6 journals showed positive association between EGCG and breast cancer. EGCG’s roles are inducting re-expression of ER by histone modification, DNA methylation, inducting apoptosis and inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. Combination 10 µM EGCG with 100 ng/mL TSA and 20 µg/mL EGCG, 5 µM SFN and 2 µM 5-aza optimalized EGCG’s function.
Conclusion: EGCG a role as adjuvant therapy for negative estrogen receptor breast cancer by regulating epigenetic mechanism.
