Malignant and proliferative changes in the lesions of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) are uncommon and have rarely been reported in the literature.1,2 In the course of reviewing case records of 180 anti-Ro/SSA precipitin-positive patients we encountered between 1982 and 1995, we found that 2 patients developed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on preexisting DLE lesions. These patients comprised 2 of 5 anti-Ro/SSA positive patients with discoid lesions, and represented 5.3% (2/38) of the total population of DLE patients that were histologically diagnosed and followed during that period. All 38 patients had DLE lesions for more than 5 years.
