Present time schistosomiasis mansoni is counted as a second global infectious disease after Malaria. Schistosoma mansoni can infect persons in endemic and non-endemic region of the worm. Medical practitioners often have difficulty diagnosing this illness leading to more progressive condition which may cause severe complications, especially neuroschistosomiasis. A diagnostic tool for early detection of schistosomiasis mansoni is needed so a proper treatment can be administered to prevent neuroschistosomiasis.
This scientific paper aims to determine the strip test cathodic antigen as an alternative test in the early detection of schistosomiasis mansoni. This is a literature review involved clinical studies, meta-analyzes, cohort studies, and epidemiological studies. Medical journals published for the last 20 years (year 1993-2013) were obtained and reviewed. in the last 20 years and the period of 1993-2013.
This literature review showed that Cathodic Antigen Reagent Strip test as one of the alternative tests had higher sensitivity and specificity, compared to Kato-Katz test as a golden standard in diagnosing schistosomiasis mansoni. For so, Cathodic Antigen Reagent Strip test could be recommended as the alternative test to early detect schistosomiasis mansoni, and prevent neuroschistosomiasis. |
