Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become a global disease and became epidemic in developing countries. Indonesia has been ranked 10th with 7.6 million diabetics. Diabetes can lead to macrovascular and microvascular complication, such as retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. DM and its complications will decrease quality of life of patients and become the cause of mortality. Complications will occur in the long term exposure to hyperglycemia, so prevention of diabetes complications can be done by avoiding the state of hyperglycemia. Some researches have shown that mulberry extract could suppress blood glucose levels.
Methods: The literature search of journals and electronic media and textbooks to obtain the necessary data. The data obtained are then collected and analyzed descriptively by looking at the validity and reliability of sources of literature.
Analysis :Mulberry extract contains alkaloids that are structurally resemble monosaccharides (azasugar). Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) tends dominant alkaloid extract of mulberry. Azasugar is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor because of its shape which resembles glucose, so it can bind to glucosidase receptor then inhibit maltose and sucrose from entering the intestinal brush border. Other studies also showed that mulberry extract contains antioxidants that can improve the morphology of rat pancreatic beta cells diabetes mellitus.
Conclusion : Mulberry extract can lower blood glucose levels because it can act as an alpha glucosidase inhibitor. Decrease in blood glucose levels can help prevent diabetes complications. Additionally mulberry extract may also suppress the production of insulin, so the pancreas beta cells are not forced to work excessively and prevent further damage.
