Isi artikelIncreasingly more studies are being reported which focus on osteopenia in SLE patients. In 1985, Dykman et al4 examined 123 patients with rheumatic diseases retrospectively (53 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 33 with SLE). They concluded that the risk for development of glucocorticoid osteopenia - as measured by single photon absorptiometry (SPA) of the radius - is similar in all patient groups. However, fractures - occurring in 30% of 93 evaluated patients - were significantly increased in patients over 50 years of age and in postmenopausal women. Cumulative dose of prednisone was the most important factor determining corticosteroid osteopenia. Patients with a cumulative dose of > 30 mg prednisone had the highest incidence of fracture and osteopenia, respectively 53% and 78%.
