Isi artikel
Observation of service encounters in three public institutions in La Paz, Bolivia, reveals that there are differences in the way marginalized indi- genous people, as opposed to members of the mainstream, urban, white-mestizo population, are addressed by institutional representatives. In this article, I show what these differences are and highlight what appear to be institution- alized, discriminatory linguistic practices through which "otherness" is marked and "respectability" is conferred or withheld.
