COUNTRIES may be desperate to hang on to their AAA ratings to keep their borrowing costs down, but companies do not necessarily share that concern. The median rating of the companies assessed by Standard & Poor’s has fallen from A in 1981 to BBBtoday (see chart 4). That rating is the lowest possible “investment grade” or, to put it another way, is just one notch above “junk” bond status.
