Isi artikelHuman parvovirus B19 infects erythroid precursor cells in the bone marrow. The most common hematologic manifestation of acute infection is anemia with reticulocytopenia. Individuals with hemolytic anemias can develop an aplastic crisis from cessation of red cell production. Thrombocytopenia and neutropenia have been reported in some patients with aplastic crises. New data suggest that chronic autoimmune neutropenia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura also may be associated with B19 infection. Additional effects of B19 on patients with underlying immune deficiencies are discussed.
