von Willebrand disease is the most common congenital bleeding disorder. Von Willebrand factor has at least two important roles in hemostasis. The standard screening tests used to evaluate children for bleeding disorders may be normal in patients with von Willebrand disease. Primary care practitioners need to be familiar with the symptoms of von Willebrand disease, its laboratory evaluation, and its treatments.
