Isi artikelThis article provides a framework for pediatricians to recognize, diagnose, treat, and counsel Southeast Asian patients with genetic red blood cell disorders. Several reports have analyzed the frequency of these clinical problems in refugees who have migrated to the United States. Much of our knowledge about these conditions is derived from extensive observations of patients throughout Southeast Asia, however. Most of these red blood cell disorders are not associated with clinical problems, although some need to be distinguished from iron deficiency. A few of the red blood cell disorders, however, are more serious conditions causing chronic hemolytic anemia and lifelong red blood cell transfusion needs, or, in some cases, resulting in intrauterine fetal death. The recognition of families with clinically insignificant red blood cell abnormalities is important because future children of the same parents can be born with more serious conditions.
