Pediatricians have a vital role in making effective mental health referrals for many children and their families. After selecting which families are appropriate for referral and the type of resource to which they should be referred, and after determining the severity of their problems, the clinician should carry out a careful process to ensure the success of the referral. Special attention should be paid to finding the pain in individual family members, locating appropriate resources, and following up once a referral has been made.
