This article considers the job of parenting from several perspectives. First, parents are described as people proceeding through their own life cycle of development. This development is influenced by biology; gender; experience; and cultural, ethnic, and political forces. Second, parents are viewed as members of a family system; families also have predictable patters of growth and development that influence, and are influenced by, parenting. Third, this article focuses on specific tasks of parenting and on the skills necessary to accomplish these tasks. It concludes with recommendations for applying these concepts in a primary care setting.
