Isi artikel
Anxiety and fear experienced by children during their stay in the pediatric intensive care unit can be accounted for by several factors, including separation from parents, invasive procedures, mechanical ventilation, disruption of the usual sleep-wake cycle, and the presence of unfamiliar people and machines. In many of these cases, pharmacologic intervention may be required to relieve some of the anxiety. This article discusses several agents which have been used for sedation in the pediatric intensive care unit. Physicians should be familiar with different agents and be able to switch from one to another when a particular agent is ineffective or leads to adverse effects.
