This article reviews the practical aspects of the laboratory evaluation of the child with suspected primary immunodeficiency. Pertinent tests for the analysis of T and B cell deficiencies, disorders of the phagocytic system, and complement deficiencies are discussed. The principles involved in the performance of these tests are reviewed with emphasis on sample collection and handling and interpretation of results.
