Of all the ocular disorders a pediatrician encounters, tearing in a child is one of the most common, and nasolacrimal duct obstructions are frequently the cause. It is important to understand, however, the anatomy and physiology of the lacrimal system to be able to exclude more serious problems that can cause tearing. The tearing process is discussed from the production of tears and their importance for the eye to their eventual drainage in the nasal cavity. Diagnosis and management of disorders of the lacrimal system are also reviewed.
