Isi artikel
In mental retardation, development is altered so that adaptive and cognitive skills are significantly deficient. Causes are varied and include congenital abnormalities, newborn trauma, infectious diseases, chromosomal abnormalities, metabolic disorders, and environmental toxins. Moderate-severe mental retardation may not be an isolated disability; associated deficits include cerebral palsy, sensory deficits, communication disorders, and psychiatric illness. Intervention strategies are directed at various aspects of the child’s life: educational, social or recreational, and behavioral.
