pediatrician must have the knowledge to identify risk factors, detect developmental delay, and arrange therapy early if the child is to reach his or her potential. Developmental surveillance at routine visits is crucial in the early identification of developmental disabilities. This includes taking a developmental milestone history, performing a neurodevelopmental assessment, and considering interdisciplinary consultation. Laboratory testing may be extensive or minimal depending on the differential diagnosis that is developed.
