Pediatric patients who require interhospital critical care transport are afflicted with a wide variety of illnesses and injuries. Both referring hospital staff and transport team personnel need to be familiar with the evaluation and stabilization of major respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurologic derangements as well as the metabolic and hematologic conditions that affect the success of stabilization. This article reviews the appropriate communication that takes place at the time of transfer. General guidelines are given for management of problems commonly encountered by pediatric interhospital transport teams, with emphasis on monitoring, prevention, and treatment of complications.
