Endocrine causes of hypertension are rare both in children and adults. When identified, however, they are frequently curable. Dysfunction of almost any endocrine gland has been associated with elevated blood pressure, and most often the hypertension is a consequence of hormone excess. Hypertension does not occur in isolation in these conditions, and the associated symptoms present useful clues to the diagnosis. This article discusses various disorders associated with hypertension and the potential mechanisms underlying the hypertension.
