Recent studies of the pathophysiology of asthma have demonstrated that a characteristic form of pulmonary inflammation accounts for clinical asthma and that this inflammation is made persistent at least in part by several reciprocating cell activation cycles. Several new lines of evidence indicate that asthma often is a completely reversible disease. Spontaneous remissions and physician-induced remissions are reviewed. The goals of current therapy for asthma and the prospects for curative interventions are reviewed in the context of this new information.
